Sloan and Papa at The Laurel School Spaghetti BingoFirst, I have badly neglected this blog. Fortunately, somehow the world is still turning without my posts. Hee hee. ;) I can't believe the school year is almost to an end. I guess that's what happens when you start a new school in March! Several people have kindly asked about Sloan's progress at The Laurel School and Brain Highways. First, The Laurel School. We couldn't be happier. I actually just posted my first ever review on Yelp regarding The Laurel School and gave it five stars. Here is what I wrote:
We recently relocated to San Francisco just for our son to attend The Laurel School. Our son is in first grade and was greatly struggling in his previous, private school. After thorough research, we visited The Laurel School and immediately knew it was the right fit. The classroom size ensures very individualized attention and the curriculum is tailored for each child. Having said that, this is not a watered-down curriculum. This is a school for bright children who simply learn differently. What a difference it makes to have knowledgeable staff who are trained in differentiated approaches to learning. Other bonuses: daily PE instruction from a PE teacher, weekly drama, music, dance and art from specialized instructors. Sometimes even yoga! My son has found an accepting environment where he is thriving! It is worth every penny!
That pretty much sums up our experience thus far. Chad was out of town over the weekend, and my dad accompanied Sloan and I to The Laurel School Spaghetti Bingo. (Thanks Gammy for watching Kensie) Although the price of Laurel is not for the faint of heart, this is not an elitist or pretentious group of families. My dad's observations at the bingo summed it up. This is an ordinary group of people who are making extraordinary sacrifices to help their children.
Now another guilty admission. We have not been following through with Brain Highways AT ALL! Ugggh! I am embarrassed to say this after I have advocated so strongly for it. I still believe in the program but now that Sloan is in school it is much harder to find the time. Also, I think because he is in an environment where he doesn't have to conform to the "norm", I find it less necessary for us. Still, I hope that we can find the time to follow through this summer. I have and will continue to refer families because I think it is helpful. They also have an online program now. One of Sloan's classmates here in SF is currently enrolled. If you are thinking of doing, it my advice would be to go for it! It can only help. Thank you for your concern for Sloan and our family!

Always a treat to see that you've got a new post up!
Love your dad's description of the Laurel School--an ordinary group of people who are making extraordinary sacrifices to help their children. So glad to hear that Sloan is thriving there!
Yeah for Laurel School! I know that you are pleased with his progress!!!
I am going to sound like a mother/teacher/grandmother (which I am) ... please continue with the Brain Highways at home. Project to the future and see with the combination of school and exercise what an awesome future Sloan will have. At some point in the not so distant future Sloan will have to conform and regulate himself. With B. H. this will teach him to do that. I know, I know, I am not living your life and I know how busy you are, but what you put in today is going to make a major difference in the future.
I hope that Kensie is doing well. I enjoyed her song!
Your next post will have me writing as a retired teacher! Hurray!!!!
