On July 24, Warner Bros. is releasing a disturbing new movie titled "Orphan" about a diabolical young orphan girl who goes to live with a family and begins to terrorize their lives. I was sickened the first time that I saw a commercial for this film. I believe the negative, destructive stereotypes this film portrays harm both orphans and adoptive families alike. There are an estimated 145 million orphans in the world today, each of them created in God's image and everyone of them as loved as much as the rest of us. In fact, until we are graced with God's grace, we are all spiritual orphans who need to be adopted by our Abba, Father. Though, I have done no formal research on the matter, my instincts tell me that probably the greatest reason people do not adopt is out of fear. This movie does nothing more than fuel those fears even if it is purely "entertainment."
Lifesong for Orphans has created the Orphans Deserve Better campaign to counteract the negativity of this film. They have written a letter to the Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. expressing their concern and suggesting a countermessage at the end of the film, and urging them to donate a portion of the proceeds to help orphans around the world. They invite anyone to sign the petition that will be sent to the Warner Bros.' Chairman. Please consider stopping by and taking a couple of seconds to join this important message.
